Fortitude is a grassroots nonprofit in Kankakee County that provides services and street outreach for the homeless. We serve hundreds of homeless individuals each year with the help of multitudes of volunteers! We operate primarily with the support of our local community.

This fall, the Kankakee City Council voted not to approve our new site for emergency overnight shelter.
Therefore, this winter season, Fortitude is providing emergency shelter through our hotel sheltering program.
If you are homeless and in need of emergency shelter, contact the Homeless Helpline number at 833-815-4673 for a screening.
A Forever Home for Fortitude!
In 2014, Fortitude purchased a fantastic building that is perfect for our services. We spent the last 2 years working on licensing, permitting, and renovating. In November, 2025, we finally completed our first 2 phases: completing the renovation of the 1st floor to accommodate our guests for showers, laundry, meals, and case management!
Our next project is to install central air conditioning in the 2-story building and then to move on the renovation of the 1-story section of our building that will eventually become an overnight shelter space for men, women, and families.
